"I suffered for a total of five years of my life due to undiagnosed hypothyroidism and Reverse T3 hypothyroidism. Unfortunately, my story is not unique, because like millions of thyroid patients, I was unable to find a doctor or an endocrinologist who was informed enough to fix my hypothyroidism. After two miserable years of being undiagnosed, I finally took my health into my own hands and became my own doctor. It was a scary place to be, feeling neglected by the medical community and the more than fifty highly regarded physicians I had spoken to. If I had trouble finding a doctor to help me in Los Angeles, I cannot even imagine how hard it would be to go through this ordeal in the smaller towns and cities throughout the United States."
"And there is more to the Paleo Thyroid Solution than the ability to effortlessly lose stubborn excess weight. Adopting a paleo/primal lifestyle is the quickest and surest way to optimize thyroid hormone metabolism—for everyone with thyroid problems and for everyone without thyroid problems. Every human being has a thyroid gland, and as the master gland of the body, it plays a critical role in all metabolic processes. If thyroid hormone metabolism is not up to par, anyone one can be thrown down the spiral slide into a pool of weight gain and is at risk of developing an assortment of thyroid-related health problems."
Until now, you might not have paid attention to how the thyroid gland works or known about the critical role it plays in every aspect of physical health and mental well-being. Unfortunately, until a problem occurs and causes disease, the thyroid gland remains overlooked and misunderstood. This chapter offers an in-depth look at this miraculous tiny gland and what can go wrong with it.
“Thyroid function is very complex and exerts a profound effect on the function of nearly every other organ in the body. Therefore, smooth functioning of the overall body chemistry depends on the health of your thyroid gland.”

"The true kryptonite of the human species is anything anti-thyroid. These are external influences such as food glutens, environmental chemicals (chlorine, bromine, fluoride), certain medications, soybeans and soy products, nuclear radiation, and even adverse health practices like too much stress, overexercising, poor diet, nutrient deficiencies, adrenal imbalances, blood sugar instability, and not enough sleep—all of which can throw off the delicate hormonal interactions that support optimal thyroid function and metabolism.
If humans will die without a thyroid gland (and zero thyroid hormones) what do you think will happen to someone who has long-term sluggish or suboptimal levels of thyroid hormones? Unresolved or untreated hypothyroidism can lead to a myriad of medical problems, including depression, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes, blood pressure issues, cholesterol issues, gynecological issues, cancers, heart disease, infertility, and more."

Hypothyroidism (and Reverse T3 Hypothyroidism) Symptoms
Trying to impart how it feels to experience full-blown hypothyroidism and its symptoms is akin to a woman attempting to explain menstrual cramps to a man; unless you have experienced it yourself, you cannot relate or understand. I had all but three or four symptoms on this list. Many hypothyroid symptoms are not visible to others, and oftentimes doctors and family members/friends think these symptoms are in one’s head, somehow fabricated by a hypochondriac human mind. These symptoms are not only real, they are rampant in people suffering from undiagnosed or mistreated hypothyroidism.
• Cold hands/feet and generally being cold regardless of the weather or temperature
• Insidious weight gain
• Inability to lose weight no matter what you do
• Weak arms (Can be general weakness like not being able to hold something heavy for a long time and/or this might manifest as tendonitis or carpal tunnel syndrome.)
• Low energy and stamina
• Serious depression or general malaise (Aside from sadness and despair, hypo-depression sometimes manifests as the feeling of being paralyzed with lack of motivation and being unable to do anything about it, even though you know something is wrong with you. It’s like you just can’t seem to take action to help yourself.)
• Needing a nap every day
• Constipation
• Sluggish reflexes (I became very clumsy and would knock over everything and bump into everything, even though I am an extremely coordinated person in general.)
• Dry cracked skin (On heels, ankles, and sometimes it shows up on the inside edge of an index finger and looks like very dry, scaly, cracked skin.)
• Hair feels like a rubber band when touched or pulled (Yet it breaks easily.)
• Hair loss
• Loss of curliness in curly or wavy hair
• Inability to focus and concentrate (Extremely difficult to read, learn, or sustain mental focus, even while watching a film or a TV show. One has to reread paragraphs in order to retain the information. Someone could be talking to you and you can barely understand what they are saying and/or you instantly forget what they just said.)
• Mixing up words in speech (sort of like dyslexia of the mouth) and difficulty remembering words (Not being able to speak properly or get the words out correctly.)
• Lower/deeper voice or scratchy/raspy voice
• Brain fog and forgetfulness
• Menstrual irregularities such as heavy bleeding, constant bleeding, uterine fibroids/polyps, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), miserable and long-lasting PMS
• Fibrocystic breasts (One or both breasts can be painful, sensitive, sore, achy, lumpy, which can also be a sign of estrogen dominance.) Infertility and miscarriages
• Weak, brittle, cracking, breaking, splitting fingernails
• Achy muscles and overall soreness
• Blood pressure issues (high or low)
• Itchy inner ears (It’s like trying to scratch an itch that you cannot reach, even with a cotton swab. This one drove me nuts!)
• Heavy legs when walking (feels like you are walking with cement legs)
• Unhealthy cholesterol results
• Low body temperature (details on page 86)
• Uncomfortable feeling in the throat/neck area (Feeling “choked up,” similar to when you are about to cry or when you feel like you can’t speak in a stressful situation, that “lump in your throat” feeling. Difficulty swallowing, constantly clearing one’s throat, and/ or not wanting clothing to cover or touch the neck.)
• Digestive problems (gas, abdominal bloating)
• Problems at work or the inability to function well at work
• Relationship issues with family/friends, romantic partners, and/ or colleagues, etc.
• Increased or uncontrollable cravings for sugar and carbohydrates
• Allergies (rare allergies are often related to untreated or mistreated Hashimoto’s)
• Messy handwriting (Issues with brain-hand-muscle dexterity can lead to messy handwriting; it feels hard to get the words from your brain through your hand onto the paper.)
• Heart palpitations (Especially when lying down, it feels as though your heart is pumping and thumping loud and strong in your chest and you are “aware” of your heartbeat like never before, and it feels scary. Often related to adrenals and/or low iron.)
• Restless legs, uncontrollable compulsion to continually readjust one’s legs (Feels like you cannot find a comfortable position for your legs. Especially annoying at night while trying to sleep. Often related to low iron.)
• Compromised immunity (Getting colds and/or flus more often than before.)
• Extended recovery needed after exercise and sore after exercise
• Sensitivity to light, sounds, and smells (Often related to adrenals.)
Low or zero sex drive
• Moody, sensitive, easily agitated, and feeling overwhelmed by simple everyday tasks (Just thinking about doing a load of laundry can feel overwhelming/stressful and bring a hypothyroid person to tears.)
• Swelling and inflammation
• Puffy eyes and face upon waking, and a general feeling of overall puffiness and bloat
• Myxedema (Swelling of the skin and underlying tissues is typical of patients with underactive thyroid glands. Discoverable by visual assessment and not being able to pinch a miniscule bit of skin on the outside of your arms, near your shoulders. Instead one is only able to pinch a thick, large portion of skin.)
• Stomach fat and a growing “tire” around your waist (thyroid and adrenal related)
• Headaches
• Constant thirst and water won’t quench it
• Feeling as if something wrong is happening to your brain, as if you are getting “dumb” and losing your cognitive abilities
• Anxiety attacks
Now, I have not read The Thyroid Diet; for all I know, the author could be giving great health advice in her book. Regardless, the cover photo is alarming and sends a very misguided message and is a classic example of a flawed, conventional approach. Notice that the foods on the cover are all carbohydrates—the most concerning being the rice cakes and the large glass of orange juice. A glass of orange juice has 25 grams of carbohydrates and 20 grams of sugar. The six rice cakes in the photograph total 42 grams of carbohydrates. The orange juice and rice cakes together equal 67 grams of carbohydrates. (The salad and veggies have an extremely low carbohydrate count, so I won’t bother factoring them in here.) Anyone who eats this meal is going to be hungry a few hours later and experience a drop in energy, because there is nothing satiating about these foods (and these foods contribute to blood sugar spikes, which will affect adrenals and inhibit fat loss). Fat and protein are technically the only two food categories that humans require for health, and they are nowhere to be found in this cover photo. For people trying to consume around 100 carbohydrates a day or lower (a carbohydrate level worthy of most people who are moderately physically active)—and considering that our ancestors likely consumed less than 80 grams of carbohydrates a day—the grouping of foods on this book cover is a joke when it comes to carbohydrate management. I don’t know about you, but I would rather have a “loaded” baked potato with bacon, chives, sour cream, and butter instead of six rice cakes and a glass of orange juice (1 large baked potato = 63 grams carbohydrates).
Maneje o stress ele atua na inflamação crônica, interfere na conversão do t4 e t3 e desregula o metabolismo:
Pratique yoga e acupuntura:
Key Vitamin/Mineral/Hormone Factors Related to Thyroid Function
SELENIUM (requerido na conversão T4 em T3)
Required for the conversion of T4 into T3. A selenium deficiency can manifest with hypothyroid symptoms.
Everyone touts its importance; yet, few seem to get enough through diet, and many hypothyroid patients are lacking in this mineral. Low intakes are being linked to type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, osteoporosis, heart disease, asthma, and colon cancer.
B12 AND HOMOCYSTEINE (AND OTHER B VITAMINS)
Vitamin B12 is important for protein metabolism and assists in the formation of red blood cells. This essential vitamin is critical for solving adrenal fatigue along with several metabolic functions, including enzyme production, DNA synthesis, hormone balance, and maintaining healthy nervous and cardiovascular systems.
IRON (A ferritina é essencial para a conversão hormonal)
Iron provides life-affirming oxygen to organ systems through its role in red cell production. Iron is an essential protein component for metabolism (low iron levels often go hand in hand with low B12 results). Without adequate iron, muscles lose their tone and elasticity. Low iron can compromise brain function: oxygen supply in the blood is assisted by iron, and the brain uses approximately 20% of the blood oxygen. Proper flow of blood in the brain stimulates cognitive activity.
Ferritin is “iron storage”; it is important to the amount of iron available in the body. Ferritin acts as a buffer against both iron deficiency and iron overload. It stores iron in a non-toxic way, deposits it in a controlled fashion, and then transports it to areas where it is needed. T4 has a hard time converting to T3 when low levels of ferritin are present.
Even though it’s referred to as a vitamin, vitamin D is actually a prohormone. The body can produce its own vitamin D through the action of sunlight on the skin, while vitamins are nutrients that are not created by the body and have to be acquired through diet or supplements. Vitamin D regulates the levels of calcium and phosphate in the bloodstream, and it promotes the mineralization and growth of bones, working together with calcium, vitamin A, and vitamin K2. And vitamin D reduces systemic, chronic inflammation.
Vitamin D helps regulate growth in virtually every cell of your body and prevents a variety of diseases. Unfortunately, today’s indoor lifestyles result in widespread vitamin D deficiency, which can significantly increase cancer risk by compromising the function of the p53 “spell-checker” gene, which is responsible for regulating healthy cell division. Epidemiology suggests links between vitamin D deficiency and most cancers, including breast, colorectal and most of the major ones. Vitamin D deficiency can also cause cardiovascular illness, cognitive impairment, and renal difficulties.
Vitamin D, crucial to thyroid hormone metabolism, needs to be present in adequate amounts when T3 “punches in” to work (inside the cell). Consider vitamin D the keeper of the “punch card machine,” so if vitamin D is not present, T3 cannot affect that cell, or “punch in.” Remember, when you don’t punch in to work, you don’t get paid. If T3 cannot affect the cells properly, you will be hypothyroid.
People with hypothyroidism are often deficient in vitamin D, regardless of sun exposure. Low vitamin D can contribute to low thyroid function. Low levels of vitamin D might make the thyroid more susceptible to irritation from chemicals in the environment, such as fluoride and chlorine. Researchers have discovered a link between vitamin D deficiency and Hashimoto’s disease. If vitamin D is not optimal, thyroid hormones might not work well because, as mentioned, vitamin D has to be present in adequate amounts when the T3 “punches in” to work. (The same applies for levels of cortisol and iron.) Vitamin D has the ability to reduce the risk of thyroid cancer.
IODINE
Iodine is a trace mineral with big implications for our health, especially for the thyroid.
Did Our Hunter-Gatherer Ancestors Have Hypothyroidism?

Based on the Paleolithic eating and lifestyle habits of our hunter-gatherer ancestors, it’s highly doubtful they had hypothyroidism. The earliest mention of thyroid issues dates back to around 12,000 years ago in China. Coincidentally, wheat and barley were introduced to China from the Middle East during that time, reflected in the name of the mythical Chinese emperor “Emperor of the Five Grains.” I will go into depth later in this chapter as to why grains are toxic and need to be eliminated from our diets in order to achieve optimal thyroid health and metabolism; however, suffice to say for now glutens (present in grains) are the biggest known triggers for autoimmune Hashimoto’s disease (an autoimmune disorder that affects the thyroid gland). I find it interesting that the first recorded occurrences of thyroid issues in China coincided with the introduction of grains into their society.
You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it.
—Maya Angelou
Don’t let anyone (not even yourself) convince you that you will always have weight issues, gynecological issues, or any other ailment in life, just because you have hypothyroidism. It simply isn’t true. And more importantly, don’t ever give up on yourself! When I was extremely hypothyroid, sick, bloated, and depressed, a family member said to me (actually they screamed at me), after they thought I had attended an excessive number of doctors’ appointments, “At some point you’re going to have to listen to one of these doctors!” Guess what? No, I didn’t have to, and I am so grateful that I didn’t take that family member’s advice and listen to any of those doctors. I would have never gotten better; I would have gotten sicker.
I kept searching until I found the solution, and ultimately, I also found the right doctor. You must ask yourself, “How badly do I want to live a great life, with a healthy body and brain?” I wanted it very badly, and thankfully my burning desire led me down a path to the ultimate opportunity: being able to share my thyroid journey with you in this book and hopefully help change your life as I changed my own.
Believe in yourself. Learn to love yourself. Just know that anything you are struggling with thyroid or body-wise is temporary and fixable. Perseverance prevails. You will prevail if you set your mind to it and want it badly enough.
I have only one request of you, dear reader: When you achieve success with your thyroid health and overall health, pass it on and pay it forward by helping others stay off the wrong path. Hypothyroidism affects over 200 million people worldwide; you are bound to run into a few of them.
